For as long as I’ve been using green cleaning products I’ve wondered why Target didn’t carry Method dishwasher detergent. Now I know why- it wasn’t created yet!! Introducing Smarty Dish, non-toxic and phosphate free! Way to go Method!! {image via Method}

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008Instant Organic Garden
Friday, August 8th, 2008
One day when I have more than an urban patio, I want to start a small urban garden. Sometimes though, the task seems so huge and costly, it makes me worried that I’d put a lot of time and effort into it and nothing would grow! When the time comes and if we’re still in Charlotte, I’m definitely going to be using this company to help me. {image via maomau}
We Can Solve It
Friday, July 18th, 2008This quick, five-minute video is part of a speech Al Gore gave yesterday regarding how to release the United States from the grip of foreign countries for energy. It has an ambitious goal, but if we put all of our resources toward it I truly believe we can meet or exceed the challenge. I hope you’ll join me in trying to do your part!
Kilowatt Ours
Monday, July 14th, 2008
Look at the picture above. That’s mountain top removal coal mining in part of the Appalachian mountains. Isn’t it incredibly sad to see what we’ve done to our environment just to mine coal for the nations energy. Even worse is when you know that alternate technologies exists and yet we still stick with the same old. Kilowatt Ours is a great, short movie that explains things in an easy to understand way and shows how quick, inexpensive and money saving changes around your home can help make all the difference.
Sustainability Movement
Monday, June 30th, 2008
My old hometown newspaper, The Arizona Republic, recently published a pretty great series on sustainability in the state. I know it’s hard for people to imagine this concept–especially in the heart of the desert where water is at a shortage and the SUV is king–but its been my finding that Arizona is actually very proactive about the movement. Especially when I compare it to my new home, Charlotte. To check out the five-day series with topics ranging from the movement, air, energy, water and homes as well as tips to live a more sustainable life, click here.
The Dead Zone
Tuesday, June 17th, 2008
I’d never heard of the ‘Dead Zone’ in the Gulf of Mexico until I read this Time article. Why won’t the federal government do more to control fertilizer runoff? This is how scientists describe it, “the water becomes as barren as the surface of the moon. What sea life that can flee the zone does so; what can’t, dies.” If that’s how the sea life is, imagine how that runoff is impacting humans as it finds its way down the Mississippi River into the Gulf…
Drain Opener
Monday, June 2nd, 2008
I tend to get a slow moving drain quite frequently due to my hair get stuck. For me, Drano works best–but it’s bad for the environment so I’ve stopped using. Most recently I tried a concoction of baking soda, salt, vinegar and hot water. Only it didn’t work as well as I’d hoped. Next time I’m going to try Earth Friendly Products Earth Enzymes Drain Opener. It’s biodegradable and contains no chemicals that can crack or rust pipes. I’ll report back after my next clog. {image via mag3737}
Baggu
Thursday, May 29th, 2008
So I finally bought my Baggus! Don’t ask why it took so long; especially since I blogged about them a long time ago. They had a great deal: six for $38. Originally, I thought six would be too many, especially since it’s just the two of us. But then I remembered many times we leave the store with so much food we can barely close the fridge door!
My color choices are navy, peacock, lavender, kelly green, fuchsia and sky. I feel so much better about going to the farmers market and grocery store!
Plant Plastic
Monday, May 12th, 2008
I’m not huge on bottled water. The stuff that comes out of the tap here in Charlotte tastes just fine to me. But, if I did buy it, I’d start picking up Primo. It’s the first nationally available bottled water whose bottle is made from plants, not crude oil! A bottle that’s friendly to the environment. Imagine that! I can only hope all the other companies that bottle in plastic will follow suit. {via Design Mom}
Frustration
Thursday, May 8th, 2008Organic Goodness
Wednesday, May 7th, 2008
Yesterday I went to the farmers market and brought home some of the freshest and tastiest food I’ve had in some time. Among my favorites are herb goat cheese,
huge, leafy green spinach,
the sweetest strawberries I’ve had in months,
the tastiest strawberry champagne jam,
moist, fluffy bread for my cheese and jam,
and pickles with green peppers and onions that would put Claussen
to shame.
This weekend I’m hoping to pick up some granola, milk, flowers, more delicious bread and hopefully see some tomatoes, squash and peppers.
Compost
Sunday, May 4th, 2008Recycled Toothbrush and Razor
Sunday, May 4th, 2008
I’m really into this company and especially these toothbrushes. They’re made from recycled yogurt cups and designed by dentists. When it’s time to replace your toothbrush, you can send it back in it’s case with the postage-paid label. Then it will be re-processed into plastic lumber for picnic tables, boardwalks and decks!
These razors are also made out of recycled plastic and I’d say they’re as good as anything you can get from Gillette. Just like the toothbrush, they are coded for recycling so send them back in the postage-paid case. And just in case you can’t find these at your local green store, you can order them online and then they’ll work with various big name blade refills you can purchase at any store.
CSA Farm
Sunday, May 4th, 2008
I’ve been thinking about joining a CSA {Community Supported Agriculture} program. If you aren’t familiar with this concept, it’s where farms offer produce subscriptions so that buyers receive a weekly or monthly basket of produce, flowers, fruits, eggs, milk, coffee, or any sort of different farm products. Most have several drop off points around the city on various days and times and typically run about $25-$30 a week. {Which I think is a great deal for all organic food!} The farm I’m considering has a drop off point at the farmers market that’s down the street from our condo. To find a CSA in your area click here and then select the CSA tab with the all CSA’s highlighted.
Recycling Center
Saturday, May 3rd, 2008
I just found out our apartment complex has a recycling center. It’s in the back where I rarely walk, but I’ve driven by it several times. I wish it was labeled or that I’d asked the office if there was a center. Boy, do I feel really stupid… but glad I don’t have to take it to Lindsey’s apartment drop off station!
