Product Review: Method Detergent

Friday, February 12th, 2010

This is my new favorite cleaning product. I know it’s not really exciting, but truthfully, after receiving a 25 load (yes 25 loads!) sample in my Alt goodie bag, I haven’t minded doing laundry as much!

I received the Fresh Air scent which is light and not perfumey at all. It smells clean. When I pulled out a set of towels over the weekend, they still smelled like the’d just come out of the dryer even though I’d washed them nearly three weeks ago.

As my regular readers know, I’ve transition into using only green cleaning and personal health products  and Method definitely doesn’t disappoint. I actually think I like this stuff better than the Kirkland brand I’ve posted about previously because it seems less harsh on my clothes. And bonus… I just received notice that Target is going to be carrying it! Yay!!!

Product Review: Kirkland Green Laundry Detergent

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

This past July, when my Mom was visiting, I was saying how I couldn’t find a laundry detergent I loved. I was also lamenting about how much I hated the price of the ones that were decent. For example, Mrs. Meyers is 64 loads for $15. That’s a lot of money for detergent, especially when you can get Purex Green Laundry Detergent for $5 bucks or so at Target!

Well Mom (knowing the best like Mom’s do) suggested Kirkland (Costco brand) environmentally friendly liquid detergent which has a light, clean fragrance and is 110 loads for $12. It works in both regular and HE washer and of course, I love it! Clothes come out spot free and smell fresh, not purfumey. Thanks Mom for the suggestion!

Bleach

To all you cleaning wizards out there; we all know Bleach works wonders in the bathroom. But what have you found to clean your shower that kills mildew and mold, makes it disappear and is safe for the environment? Please share!

Linen Dishtowels

Monday, August 10th, 2009

As I mentioned earlier, I took a little trip to Ikea this past weekend. I’ve been wanting these dish towels for awhile and I must admit, they’re just as perfect as I hoped. I foresee another trip to Ikea in the near future.

Revisit: Earth Day Resolution

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

So it has been just over two months since Earth Day and I thought it was time to see how our resolutions are going.

If you remember, my resolution was to begin using only personal care and cleaning items that are safe for the environment. Well, this has proved a bit tougher than I originally thought. First, I have a hard time throwing out things that still have product left (shampoo/conditioner). Even if the new items are safe for the environment, it still is wasteful, to me, to throw away product. And, second, I’m particular about my products. I have oily skin that doesn’t need any more oil! And, to top it off, my skin is easily irritated.

So, here’s what I’m loving and here’s what I’m still searching for. I’d love your suggestions.

Dishwasher Detergent
: I recently stumbled upon Method dishwasher detergent and so far I’m really loving it. My dishes come out clean and not spotty.

Laundry Detergent:
I’m still on the hunt for one I absolutely love. I like for my clothes to have a slight fragrance but not be overpowering (like how I remember Tide being). I’ve used Seventh Generation, Method and Mrs. Myers. Right now I have Mrs. Myers and I love the scent in the bottle but I don’t smell anything on my towels or sheets (where I mostly want the scent.) Any suggestions?

Dish Soap: We don’t do a ton of stuff by hand so this isn’t a huge deal. But for the pots and glasses we don’t put in the dishwasher, this Mrs. Myers soap works great.

Fabric Softener: Do you know what’s in Downy? If you don’t, just google fabric softener and the word toxic to find out what exactly all those ingredients are. Then, start using laundry balls. We have a small dryer and two balls get rid of all the static cling. My mom has a larger dryer and invested in four. These balls definitely do the job without the chemicals.

Bleach: To help brighten my whites and help with stains, I’ve started using Borax. I’ve only used it about a week and none of the clothing was new, so it’s hard to tell if it will truly work until I wash something new. But, so far, I don’t have any complaints.

Floors: I’m pretty sure this is what my grandmothers used and guess what, it still works just as well! I create a mixture of white vinegar and hot water and it cleans tile floors wonderfully!

Dusting: I don’t use any product to dust. They leave a nasty film and can actually damage your wood. Instead, I use microfiber rags. They work great on all my furniture and my wood floors!

Windows & Mirrors: A mixture of room temperature water and white vinegar in a spray bottle leaves me with 100% streak free windows and mirrors. It doesn’t smell as great as Windex, but it isn’t hazardous either.

Toilet & Shower: With some elbow grease and a scrubbing brush, the abrasives in Bon Ami work just as well as Comet but again, without the chemicals.

Counter Spray: Occasionally, the counters need a spray down. I recently picked up this Method spray and it really cuts grease.

Hand Soap: I refill all of our soap dispensers with Method. I like the scent and the way it cleans.

Body Wash: I love the scent of the Method Body Wash. It moisturizes my skin and leaves a nice, subtle fragrance.

Shampoo/Conditioner: My stylist suggested Aveda and I do love the way it makes my hair feel and smell. But, I hate the price. Any other suggestions?

Toothpaste: As soon as we finish up our Crest, I’m picking up Tom’s of Maine.

Deodorant: This will be a toughie. There doesn’t seem to be antiperspirants on the market that are green, only deodorant. My sister-in-law uses Tom’s of Maine and said she likes the scent but not that she still sweats. Anyone have suggestions?

Lotion: Again, I’m on the hunt. I’ve used Burt’s Bees but the fragrance kind of bothered me i.e. I could smell it throughout the day and definitely didn’t like it. Any suggestions?

Product Review: Method Dishwasher Detergent

Monday, June 29th, 2009

So my Earth Day Resolution was to start using only personal health products {where available} that are safe for the environment. And part of this, is to continue implementing green cleaning products into my life. I’m good to go on body wash, laundry detergent and floor cleaner but I’ve been on the hunt for a dishwasher detergent that actually works.

Well guess what? Method has come through! Their Smarty Dish is naturally deprived, phosphate-free, full of biodegradable materials and actually does a great job! We do a brief rinse of all our dishes, put a tab in, run the dishwasher and viola everything comes out clean!

You wouldn’t knowingly eat chemicals that kill animals and plants and pollute the water that run into your drinking source, right? So why would you eat off dishes that have been washed in them? My thoughts exactly!

Method Dishwasher Detergent

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

For as long as I’ve been using green cleaning products I’ve wondered why Target didn’t carry Method dishwasher detergent. Now I know why- it wasn’t created yet!! Introducing Smarty Dish, non-toxic and phosphate free! Way to go Method!! {image via Method}

Vintage Inspired Linens

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

Lately I’ve been into vintage French inspired linens. Chelsea over at Frolic! found these three beautiful options for me, all very affordable.
These inexpensive ($0.49) Ikea dishtowels are so perfect! They’d look great hanging out in the open of a small kitchen and would add so much charm.
I’m picturing this on a farmhouse table with a gathering of close friends for some wonderful summer fare.
Another Ikea find, I love the gray-blue color and the nubby, linen texture. {images via Ikea & Farmhouse Wares}

Drain Opener

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

I tend to get a slow moving drain quite frequently due to my hair get stuck. For me, Drano works best–but it’s bad for the environment so I’ve stopped using. Most recently I tried a concoction of baking soda, salt, vinegar and hot water. Only it didn’t work as well as I’d hoped. Next time I’m going to try Earth Friendly Products Earth Enzymes Drain Opener. It’s biodegradable and contains no chemicals that can crack or rust pipes. I’ll report back after my next clog. {image via mag3737}

More Green Cleaning

Sunday, March 2nd, 2008

Sometimes green cleaning products can be tough to locate. These should all be at your local grocery store or Target. They also cost just about the same as the old stuff you’re use to buying. All of these products were tested {on real dirty homes and dishes} by the Good Housekeeping Research Institute, one of my favorite testing institutes!

Of the ready-to-use products tested, Sun & Earth All Purpose {$3.79} cut through greasy messes the best, especially on counter tops.

The GHRI experts found one standout in the dish-detergent category: Planet Ultra Dishwashing Liquid {$3.09.} It zapped dried-on grease and food particles, and cleaned the most plates per use.

For overall laundry spot removal the Arm & Hammer Essentials 2X Concentrated {$3.49} came out on top. It was particularly effective at washing in cold water, with top scores for removing ink, mascara, wine, gravy and grape juice stains.

Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner {$5} has scored high in several GHRI tests. It is perfect for heavier jobs than most all-purpose cleaners. Think scouring barbecue grills. It’s concentrated though, so be sure to dilute. The only downside? I think it stinks!

Best Cleaning Products

Monday, February 4th, 2008

I’m always searching for the newest and best cleaning supplies. I hate spending a lot of money on things like this and I love multi-purpose products that are also safe for the environment. Here are my favorite:

Vinegar is a natural neutralizer and cleaning agent. I use it on my mirrors and windows, equal parts water and vinegar. Put it in a spray bottle, shake the bottle around, spray, wipe with microfiber towel and viola you have a streak free shine. I also put it down the garbage disposal to get rid of smells and finally to wash no-wax floors I add 1 cup vinegar to 1 gallon of warm water.

Stephen’s mom turned me on to these. I did a little research and found that recent studies have revealed dryer sheets and liquid fabric softener contain cancer-causing and neurotoxic solvents. There are so many chemicals in our environment, I figured adding one to our clothing was not the best idea. These balls are non-toxic, allergen-free and all natural. They seem to make my clothes as soft as liquid softener and dryer sheets but without the chemicals.

My mom gave me a few of these micro-fiber towels. They are like a magnet for dust. I use them on blinds, the TV, computer screen, really anything that has dust and grime on it. You don’t need to use any product with them, they are perfect all alone.

This little magic eraser lifts scuff marks from wood floors, restores white baseboards and removes soap scum from the shower. It’s also said to erase crayon marks from walls but I haven’t tried that yet. It’s a little more expensive but totally worth it.

Unlike standard chlorine bleach, this environmentally safe alternative will keep clothes and linens vibrant without yellowing or weakening fibers or leaving a lingering smell.

Bon ami is similar to Comet except it’s nontoxic, biodegradable and contains no dyes, fragrance or bleach. It’s a gently abrasive powder that leaves enamel stove tops and stainless steel pans spotless without a scratch. I love it for scrubbing the shower.
