Sustainable Friday: Eco Tools

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

Hey! Just a quick Sustainable Friday post to share my most recent love, my bath sponge!

Mine was in desperate need of replacing and I came across this one by Eco Tools made out of recycled plastic. It’s the same price as the a non-recycled plastic sponge ($1.99) but better because it’s recycled. :) I found it at my local Target store not by all the body washes where you’d think it’d be, but instead up by the eco-products in the makeup section (by Burt’s Bees). I love that when it’s all torn up and worn out I can just throw it in the recycling bin! One less thing in the landfill, yeah!

Sustainable Friday: Cosmetics

When it comes to cosmetics, in particular make-up, I struggle finding green products I love. Yes, I have a body wash and shampoo that are both 100% plant based, but I love my foundation and mascara that aren’t green.

The truth is, I just haven’t found a green company that even comes close to the make-up I love. So what’s a girl to do when an unregulated industry is knowingly putting poison in their products and labels like natural and herbal really mean nothing?

First off, do your research. Cosmetics Database is a great place to check out your products and see what ingredients they contain and what the chemicals are known to cause. I checked everything from my lotion to my foundation.

Then, watch this excellent short (8-minute) video which does a great job of explaining this issue. I learned a lot and am completely recommitted to finding green products I love.

I am completely obsessed with Simplesong’s new website. Suann has an expanded collection  of ready made and personalized stationary that I can barely control myself from purchasing everything! Not to mention, how amazing are her wedding invitations? I’m obsessed with that envelope liner pattern.

J.Crew can do now wrong with their summer tees. I’m still not tiring of ruffles and am seriously obsessing about this beauty.

We just got news that three separate friends are pregnant which means it’s time for me to stock up on baby cards! Loving these gender neutral lovelies.

All of the sudden I’m into super feminine pinks for my toes. This matches my skin tone perfectly and is so flattering. Love.

It’s my marker dreamland. Every color I could want for a fun little price.

A few weeks back I solicited answers to the question: what’s your favorite mascara? And I got tons of suggestions with a few being repeated several times. Now I must admit, if I can get something that works just as well but at a fraction of the price from a drugstore brand, then I’m all for it. And, truly, I love this stuff. It doesn’t clump, it doesn’t flake and best of all, no raccoon eyes!

Benjamin Moore Camouflage which is the color we painted the home office/spare bedroom. It’s much more army green than it appears on my monitor but I must say, it’s perfect. I love it and have to thank Bryn for helping me to pick it out.

Mascara

Once again I’m on the hunt for mascara. I feel like I’ve been through so many. Do any of you have suggestions for a fantastic one that thickens and lengthens, doesn’t give raccoon eyes (that’s a biggie for me) and doesn’t flake or clump?

Incredibly fun and oh-so-me notebooks.

Diptyque Olene perfume. I received a sample and it’s one of the very few I’ve found that doesn’t turn rank on me. It’s not too sweet, not too musky and best of all, doesn’t give me headaches. I think I may have found my new scent…

Bryn’s acrylic business card holder and push pin box. Perfection.

P.S. The Abstract Expressionist stamps I loved are available today! I’m not even going to waste my time going to the PO and have already placed my order online!

This scarf found on ideeli is screaming spring to me. I’m trying to bring a little bit of bohemian into my life. Think this will do?

I spotted this in a home tour featured in the most recent Lonny. Did you know in addition to fabric and bedding Rubie Green is now offering this cute little pouch in her amazing East Village fabric? I didn’t either. Awesome, right?

My brown flats are starting to get pretty run down. I’m eyeing these but hoping they go on sale soon.

Is it gray? Is it purple? Is it mauve? No idea. But I do think the color pretty much rocks and will be on my fingers and toes very shortly.

Anything to dress up a simple tunic or solid colored dress. I’m loving the length and pretty spring colors in this cluster.

Dark polish on fingernails. Especially after seeing them on Joslyn.

Reading, curled up in a comfy chair while it’s cold outside. I’m onto my fourth book since January 1st and feel great about already being halfway through my New Years Resolution. I had forgotten how amazing it feels to get lost in great writing.

Wolf Kahn pastels. They remind me of sunsets in Arizona where the sky is purple and orange and blood red and everything glows.

A pretty charm-esque bracelet. Dainty yet bohemian.

Coveting…

This glamorous mirrored lamp. As my friend Tonya says, every house needs a little glamour. This will look awesome in our hallway.

The pattern of this carrara marble tile. We’re finally getting rid of the stained grout and disgusting, chipped tile in our bathroom; this pattern has won my heart over.

A new cheek color. I officially have the longest lasting blush. Seriously. It will be 3-years-old in March and I still can’t see the bottom of the container!  (I only know this because I received it for my birthday right before I moved to North Carolina.) It’s MAC and although I love the color, I’m getting tired of it! I’ve heard really good things about how flattering NARS Orgasm is on all skin tones. I think it will be fun for spring.

This lamp to sit atop the bedroom dresser. With a contemporary drum shade, of course.

OPI

Nailpolish

I received the OPI nail color You Don’t Know Jacques in my stocking and I must say, OPI hit it out of the park. It was a huge hit around the house and my toesies are wearing it proudly.

Red lipstick always reminds me of my mom. She could be wearing nothing, and still have her red lips! So when Joanna posted about this pretty girl and her quest to find the perfect red lipstick, I decided it was high time I discovered mine. I think red lips instantly make you look glamours and pulled together, no matter what you’re wearing! I’ll post my results soon.

This stuff is a game changer for me. It evens out my skin tone, I don’t sweat through and have shine midday, it doesn’t rub off on my clothes and it’s so lightweight I don’t know it’s on. I’ve seriously had some good luck in the beauty department lately.

Product Review: Origins Wonders

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

As I’m sure you’re aware, I’ve been on the hunt for a new facial cleanser. I want it to be as safe for the environment as possible and I want it to work! I have oily skin that tends to get irritated easily and in the harsh winter cold can become dried out. Well ladies and gentlemen, drum roll please… I have found a winner. I’m not kidding. I know I can jump around with products but I am in love. Literally in love with these three products.
Checks and Balances leaves my skin clean and refreshed. There is no tightness and it controls oil for hours. I use it day and night and have noticed a considerable difference in the shine factor.
Purifying Tonic is the perfect compliment to Checks and Balances. The dullness that has plagued my skin is slowly disappearing, as are the blackheads. My skin is refreshed after I use this and truly looks and feels clean. There isn’t any tightness like with usual tonics (aka astringents) and I love that it gets the last remaining makeup and gunk off.
Modern Friction has made my skin so soft. I use it twice a week and can see an immediate change. My blackheads are disappearing and my pores appear smaller. My skin is soft and looks and feels reenergized. It doesn’t irritate like some scrubs with sand have been known to. I absolutely love this.

With all three of these products I use a very minimal amount. The size of a pea for the cleanser, one dousing of the tonic on a cotton ball and the size of a dime on the scrub. I anticipate each of these to last well over six months, thus I’m okay with the cost. And did I mention, each of these products are tested on people not animals, is made exclusively with plants and essential oils not chemicals and the tonic is even organic? I have nothing to complain about!

Body Lotion

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

I’m on the hunt for new body lotion. I picked up a new one over the weekend and today I’m sticky. I cannot stand it. Real Simple recommends Eucerine Daily Replenishing Lotion because it softened skin without being slick or leaving any kind of residue. Sounds perfect. What are you loving these days?

Product Review: Elta MD Sunscreen

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

One thing I’m religious about is putting sunscreen on my face. I’m a product junkie so you can trust me when I say I’ve tried tons of different sunscreens.

Last year when I was at the dermatologist having some melasma looked at, she recommended Elta MD Oil-Free Sunscreen since I have, well, oily skin. And you know, this stuff is amazing! It’s light, fragrance-free and doesn’t leave any film on my face. It’s also safe for sensitive skin. If you’re on the hunt for sunscreen I definitely recommend Elta MD. They have a full line including products for older skin, acne prone, sport, water proof and body lotion.

Elta MD is pretty much only available through dermatologist offices, however, I have found a few places that carry it online, including Amazon. Prices are consistent everywhere, but don’t be turned off with the price. It’s so worth it.
