Food Revolution

Hey guys- I’m not loving Independent Artisan Wednesday. I’m thinking the artisans can be featured just as well with my loving post or with a random Monday or Friday post. So, until I find another structured Wednesday post, I’m just going to post randoms. (OR, if anyone has suggestions as to what you’d like to see please leave a comment.)

So, anyway, last night I saw my first preview for Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution on ABC. I think it’s incredibly scary what American’s eat. The chemicals, the processed foods, the amount of pure shit. Don’t get me wrong, I like sweets. I drink an occassional soda (yeah, New Years Resolution isn’t going so well…) and I love junk food as much as the next person. But, I was luckily raised by a mom who knew the importance of a home cooked meal. It brought our family together, we talked about our days and believe it or not, 5 days a week we ate a home cooked meal (sometimes just sandwiches but it wasn’t take-out). We sat down, together, at the table, not in front of the TV and ate and chatted.

It’s scary to think that today’s youth are the first generation (since it has been tracked) that are expected to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents. Not to mention the health problems that are caused by obesity which in turn leads to higher health costs. It’s downright ridiculous. Obesity and overweightness is completely preventable. I’ve had people say to me I don’t know because I’m not overweight. I do know. I make a conscious choice to work out. I make a conscious choice to eat carrots and hummus instead of chips. I make a conscious choice to take the stairs instead of the elevator. I make a conscious choice to join a CSA and spend my hard earned money on locally grown organic produce. It is a choice.

Sure I’d love to have fast food, a huge soda and fries. I’d love to sit on the couch after work instead of go for a walk. But it’s bad for me. I know it and I make a choice to be healthy. I’m tired of people saying they can’t help it. They can adjust their thought process. Adjust their habits. Yes, I know some people have a harder time with weight management than others. But the same things work for everyone- eat right and exercise. If you can’t do it on your own then seek help. Is it worth having a shorter life because of your food addiction?

Anyway, that’s my soap box. I hope you’ll tune it. Maybe you’ll learn something!

  1. Thanks for the heads up about this show. I hadn’t heard of it before.

One year in college, I decided to give up food I couldn’t pronounce for Lent. Everything acted like I was completely insane. It was really the start of a food obsession, one that got unhealthy for a little while, but on the other side of that obsession, I’m more critical of what I’m willing to put in my mouth.

I feel lucky to have moved to an “almost” southern city (Charlottesville, VA) where the local food movement has been strong for many years. Polyface Farms is here (featured in The Omnivore’s Dilemma), getting a share in a CSA is fairly competitive, and local food markets are still going strong, even in the shadow of major supermarkets. STILL, I see fast food all over, people who don’t know what skim milk is, and people who eat red meat at every meal (seriously, I work with a guy who does). And we’re a college town, with an educated population!

I will be GLUED to this show. Thanks again for the heads up.

I CANNOT wait for this show! As a former teacher, I am a big proponent of changing cafeteria food as well as parents’ mindset about what they feed their children. I just love Jamie Oliver and all he stands for.

I am so lucky my family appreciated (and still does!) the work it takes to put a home cooked meal on the table 5 nights a week! The time is a small price to pay…the healthy food, the relationship building and the good habits that were formed make every minute worthwhile!

Hi, I’m from the U.K. Jamie did the same thing over here and changed the way people eat forever. You’ll be shocked what goes into the food!

  7. Christine- I’m so glad to hear that! I sure hope Jamie can change some thing here. The movie Food Inc. opened peoples eyes but perhaps a mainstream TV show will do better. It’s downright scary how unhealthy people are here!
